"As 2007 grew to a close we at
Bumi Sehat had much to be grateful for. This year
Yayasan (non-profit foundation) Bumi Sehat (Healthy
Mother Earth) was chosen #1 not-for-profit organization
in Bali, of over 700. This continued our sense of
inspiration from the 2006 receipt of the Italian
Alexander
Langer International Peace award, which is given to
one person in the world each year, who is truly making a
difference.
But in day to day operations, our situation at Bumi Sehat is
always a little desperate. I am asking all my friends to help if they
can, while we diligently apply for grants. The problem
with grants is that the Tsunami is not in the news, so
no one has the inspiration to fund the Aceh clinic.
Meanwhile, the
bombings in Bali several years ago destroyed the
(tourist-based) economy here, but no
one realizes how profoundly this effects pregnant women
and new mothers.
For the most part Bumi Sehat
survives upon the generosity of regular people, like
you, who give
until it hurts. I am embarrassed to ask my friends one
more time for help, but I must. The Sakthi
Foundation in Fairfield, Iowa USA generously gives us a
501(c)(3) “umbrella” through which Americans can give to
us and receive tax exemptions, for which we are truly
grateful. "
